Whisper Phone Picture Tutorial






I've been a busy lady working on projects for my classroom.  Up first, Whisper Phone!!  I cannot afford to purchase these bad boys because I need a new classroom rug.  I went to Home Depot and hung out in the plumbing department.  Here is my final product!


 

Supplies Need:


3/4 elbow
10 elbows in each bag.

I purchased 4 bags @ $2 each
One PVC pipe at 1/2" x 10"for a few dollars
Home Depot will cut into 25 4.5" pieces for free!

PVC Cement for $6

Steps:

I found starting with the elbow allowed you to set it down without dripping glue everywhere!


 Be sure to glue both sides.
It will take about 20 seconds for glue to adhere.
I spun my pipe to keep the extra glue from running down the sides.  

 I had spray paint from another project and used it to decorate.  Too Cute.
Final Product!


I found a table and two chairs at a garage sale a month ago.  I shared the pictures in a previous post.  Here is a picture of the old table.

    I never thought of spray painting the "Whisper-ma-phones" as I always call them in honor of The Lorax. Did you sand them before painting or use special paint? The table and cushion crates are adorable!

    I use environmentally friendly Krylon Spray Paint.

    Fusion for Plastic won't have you sanding or priming, and it bonds easily.

    We use Krylon for EVERYTHING! :)

    I use the whisper phones too, but I just bought the one-piece drain trap pvc = they're about 2-3 inches in diameter and 'U' shaped, no gluing either. I DO like that you painted yours... cute! and thanks for the info about the crates.

    I painted and placed scrapbook alpha letters on the table. After everything was dry, I used Polyurethane to seal the table.

    Whisper Phones are used for independent reading. Kids often have troubles reading silently and are comforted by hearing themselves read. They are able to whisper into the phone and hear themselves read clearly without disturbing others.

    The whisper phones work wonderfully! You can hear everything very well. I went to Home Depot again today. I played around with the sizes and found that you can probably make the whisper phones without glue (which I would have preferred) if you purchase the 1/2 in elbow. It is a tight fit. They didn't have any of this size when I went originally. You can save lots of money and buy them in a pack of 10 for $1.50 or individually for 28 cent. I had an old set and allowed the kids to take home during summer. I decided it was time for a fresh set. I kept the old (not painted) to know the sizes of the elbow and pipes needed. I recommend giving one a go and trying it out!

    Today I went to Home Depot in search of the supplies for this project. When I asked the man to cut the pipe into 4.5" pieces, he laughed at me and said they could only cut into two pieces. I said, "Oh, no, I was told that you would cut them into 4.5" pieces." So he got another guy and the other guy said okay! So a message to all - stand up to the Home Depot men!! And thanks, Cheryl, for being my backup. :)
